Storage Unit Packing Tips for Dubai

Packing a storage unit doesn’t have to be difficult. With a bit of planning, you can fit more into less space and avoid paying for a bigger unit than you need. These tips from Ideal Home Storage Dubai show you how to pack a self storage unit in Dubai efficiently, safely and in the right order. For general advice on boxes and wrapping, see our packing tips.

How to Pack a Self Storage Unit in Dubai

1

Start With an Inventory

Before anything goes into the unit, write a list or take photos of everything you are storing. It helps you declare the value of your goods, makes a claim easier if something is ever damaged, and shows you at a glance what is where. Keep a copy somewhere safe outside the unit. See our storage checklist for the other items you need on move-in day.
2

Pack in Matching Boxes

Boxes of the same size stack straighter and higher, which uses the full height of your self storage unit. Choose strong boxes that will not buckle under weight. You can find suitable ones in our packing supplies guide.
3

Use the Loading Bay and Trolleys

When you arrive, unload at the loading area and move your things with a trolley instead of carrying them by hand. Keep loads stable and don’t stack them higher than you can control, so you stay safe and nothing gets damaged.
4

Lift Items Off the Floor

Spread a dust sheet over the floor first, then place wooden pallets or similar supports under boxes and furniture. Raising items off the ground protects them from dust and moisture, which is especially useful in Dubai’s humid climate.
5

Organise by How Often You'll Need Things

Put the heaviest boxes and bulky furniture at the back. Keep anything you’ll want to reach regularly near the door, and leave a clear walkway down the middle if you plan to visit often. A little thought now saves a lot of unpacking later.

6

Make the Most of the Space

Build up from the back of the unit towards the door, filling small gaps with little items. Stand sofas and mattresses upright on their sides, and stack chairs seat to seat to save floor space. Taller stacks of even boxes make the best use of the unit’s height.
7

Use Furniture as Extra Storage

Wardrobes, drawers, laundry baskets and suitcases have plenty of empty room. Fill them with soft items such as clothes, cushions and linen so no space goes to waste.
8

Protect and Clean Before Storing

Wrap sharp or fragile items so no one gets hurt and nothing breaks. Clean garden and outdoor equipment, and wipe a light coat of oil on tools and mower blades to prevent rust.
9

Do a Final Check

Before you lock up, take out any papers or items you may need soon, such as contracts, ID copies and chargers, and keep them somewhere easy to reach. That way you won’t need to reopen your unit to find them.
10

Cover and Lock Up

Place a dust sheet over your belongings to keep them clean, then close the door and secure it with a strong padlock that only you hold the key to.

Packing a Storage Unit: Frequently Asked Questions

Use matching boxes, put heavy items at the back, stack neatly up to the ceiling, and fill gaps with small items. Keep a walkway if you will visit often.

Pallets and dust sheets keep boxes and furniture away from dust and moisture. This is a simple, low-cost way to protect your belongings in Dubai’s humid climate.

Anything you expect to need soon or regularly, such as seasonal items, documents and tools. Heavy, rarely used things belong at the back.

It is strongly recommended. A list or set of photos helps you declare the value of your goods, supports an insurance claim if something is damaged, and saves time when you are looking for something later.
