Packing Tips for Self Storage in Dubai

Packing well is the easiest way to keep your things safe in a storage unit. Whether you are moving house, decluttering or renting self storage in Dubai for the first time, these practical tips from Ideal Home Storage Dubai will help you pack faster, protect fragile items and make the most of your space. You may also find our packing supplies guide and storage checklist useful.

1. Put Together a Packing Kit

Keep the basics in one box so they are always within reach: a marker pen, packing tape, sticky labels and a pair of scissors. Having these close saves time and keeps you organised.

2. Get Enough Boxes in Different Sizes

Buy more storage boxes than you think you need, in a mix of sizes. The right box for each item makes packing quicker and keeps belongings protected in transit and in your unit.

3. Take Extra Care With Fragile Items

Valuables and breakables need special attention. Even a careful move can cause damage if items are not wrapped and padded properly, so give them their own protection.

How to Pack Specific Items

Plates, Ceramics and China

  • Wrap each plate in bubble wrap and stand them on their edge in a small or medium box.
  • Don’t overfill the box, as pressure from the contents can cause cracks.
  • Wrap other ceramics in bubble wrap and fill any gaps with acid-free tissue paper or packing paper.

Glassware

  • Wrap every glass separately in packing paper and stuff crumpled paper inside to remove empty space.
  • Line the base of the box with plenty of paper, with heavier pieces at the bottom and lighter ones on top.

Cutlery and Silverware

  • Clean, dry and polish silver before packing so it doesn’t tarnish over a long stay.
  • Wrap pieces in soft cloth or place them in sealed bags to prevent scratches.

Electronics and Appliances

  • Label cables and cords before unplugging so setting up again is easy.
  • Coil cords neatly and fasten them with ties.
  • Wrap the main device in bubble wrap, place it in a box and fill any space with packing material.
  • Defrost and drain freezers, washing machines and fridges, and let them dry for a couple of days. Store them with the doors slightly open to stop damp building up.

Jewellery

  • Earrings: push them through a piece of thick card, or wrap them in cloth or a small sealed bag.
  • Necklaces: thread one end through a drinking straw to stop tangles, then wrap and fasten.
  • A roll-up jewellery organiser with separate pockets keeps pieces apart and protected.
  • Keep your most valuable jewellery with you during the move.

Artwork

  • Unframed pieces: handle with clean gloves, wrap in acid-free tissue and secure to a sheet of cardboard. A mirror box adds extra protection.
  • Framed pieces: tape a cross over the glass with painter’s tape to limit breakage, wrap in acid-free tissue and bubble wrap with extra padding on the corners, and pack snugly in a box.
  • Sculptures: wrap each section separately in bubble wrap and secure it with tape.
Use protective wrapping on any delicate item to avoid scratches, dents and breakage.

4. Keep Clothes Out of Plastic Bags

Pack bedding and clothing in boxes, never sealed plastic bags. Moisture builds up inside plastic, which is a particular risk in Dubai’s humid climate. For extra protection, put a moisture absorber in the box.

5. Protect Your Furniture

Chair legs and corners are easy to damage and costly to repair. Cover them with corrugated cardboard or similar padding, and use furniture covers to keep dust off.

6. Use Wardrobe Boxes for Hanging Clothes

Hang clothes in wardrobe boxes so they keep their shape and stay crease-free while in storage.

7. Clean Tools and Equipment First

Wash and dry garden tools and other equipment before storing them. This stops dirt, rust and damage building up over time.

8. Keep Your Moving-Day Essentials Out

Set aside things you’ll want straight away, such as toilet paper, mugs, a kettle, tea or coffee, snacks and phone chargers. You’ll be glad you did at the end of a long moving day.
Follow these packing tips and your belongings will stay well protected, giving you a smooth storage experience from start to finish.

Packing for Storage: Frequently Asked Questions

Use sturdy boxes in several sizes, fill each one fully without overloading it, label every side, and wrap fragile items individually. Because of Dubai’s heat and humidity, add moisture absorbers and keep fabrics in boxes rather than plastic bags.

It is best not to. Plastic bags trap moisture and can cause damp and odours. Pack clothes and bedding in cardboard boxes, and place a moisture absorber inside for extra protection.

Empty and drain it, clean it, and let it dry completely for a couple of days. Store it with the door slightly open so air can circulate and mould does not form.

Yes, where you can. Taking apart beds and tables saves space, and keeping the screws in labelled bags taped to each piece means nothing gets lost.
